Ordering a drive: motor, supply and control information

Mingkong · Updated

A drive enquiry is easier to assess when it includes the motor label, available power supply and the work the machine performs. Use the checklist below for an existing drive replacement or a new variable-frequency drive request.

Send the motor and existing drive references

Provide clear nameplate photos and the complete manufacturer order number. Record motor power, rated voltage, rated current, frequency and motor type. For replacement work, also list any communication card, keypad, braking equipment or filter that must be retained.

Describe the available supply

Include the supply voltage, number of phases and frequency. Have the project engineer identify the earthing arrangement and any site-specific power restrictions. Do not substitute the motor voltage for the drive input-supply requirement.

Schneider Electric lists separate ATV320 references for different supply arrangements, even within one power rating. Its ATV320 catalogue also distinguishes continuous output current from transient current. Confirm the exact reference rather than selecting from the series name or kilowatt rating alone.

Explain the load and operating cycle

Describe the machine, starting conditions, operating speed range, acceleration and stopping requirements, and how often it starts or changes speed. State whether the application is a pump, fan, conveyor or another load. Include any overload or braking requirements already defined by your engineer.

Add cabinet and environmental information

Record the intended enclosure, available space, ventilation, ambient temperature, installation altitude and estimated motor-cable length. In the ATV320 installation manual, NVE41289, environmental limits and derating depend on installation conditions and drive variant. Those limits must be checked for the proposed model; a maximum series rating is not a guaranteed site rating.

Confirm controls and accessories

List the PLC or control system, required communication protocol, local controls and any specified safety function. Ask for the proposed accessory references to be identified in the quotation, rather than assuming every card, reactor or resistor is included.

Prepare one concise request

Send the motor and drive photos, quantity, supply details, machine description, required controls, delivery destination and date. Mark unknown items as “to be confirmed” so the initial enquiry can still proceed.

Explore drives and soft starters or send your requirements. Final selection, protective devices and commissioning settings require review against the exact manufacturer’s documentation and the project conditions.
