PLC replacement: check hardware, firmware and project files

Mingkong · Updated

A useful PLC replacement enquiry identifies the installed controller and the project it belongs to. Start with the complete order number and a clear label photo, then add the software and interface information below. This helps separate an exact spare-part request from a migration project.

Identify the installed equipment

  • Manufacturer, complete CPU order number and quantity.
  • Hardware revision and installed firmware, when available.
  • Order numbers of connected I/O, communication modules and HMI.
  • Whether you need the identical reference or will consider an alternative.

Keep suffixes and revision markings in your parts list. A family name such as S7-1200 describes a range; it does not identify every electrical and communication option of an individual CPU.

Record the project and software versions

Tell us which engineering software and version your maintenance team uses, whether an up-to-date project backup exists, and whether the original machine builder must approve changes. For an initial quotation, send version information rather than passwords or confidential program files.

For example, Siemens documents specific migration rules for S7-1200 V3-to-V4 replacement, including HMI communication and some expansion-module firmware considerations. That guidance is specific to the stated migration; it is not a blanket compatibility statement for other generations or brands. See the Siemens TIA Portal V20 migration guidance.

Describe the interfaces that must be retained

Include the supply, input/output types, module arrangement, network protocols and connected devices. Add terminal or cabinet photos if they help identify the installation. If safety functions are involved, identify that requirement explicitly for review by the responsible engineer.

Define the delivery scope

State whether your request covers hardware only, accessories, or a separately agreed programming and commissioning scope. Record the required delivery date and destination. Hardware availability and compatibility should be confirmed for the specific order.

A short enquiry you can reuse

“We require [quantity] of [manufacturer and full order number]. Installed hardware/firmware: [details or unknown]. Engineering software: [version]. Connected modules and HMI: [references]. Exact replacement required / alternatives may be reviewed. Required delivery: [date and country]. Attached: label photos and parts list.”

Browse PLC and I/O products, or send your requirements. You can start with the information available and identify anything still to be confirmed. Replacement and commissioning decisions belong to the responsible engineering team.

These links provide product context. Compatibility and configuration are confirmed for the specific project.

Siemens SIMATIC S7-1500 PLCs

Hardware PLC selection for production equipment and distributed automation. Match the CPU capability, I/O system and engineering software to the control project.

OMRON CP2E Compact PLCs

Compact machine controllers with different local I/O and network configurations. Choose the CPU suffix from the wiring and communications schedule.

XINJE XD5 Enhanced PLCs

Expandable PLC family for sequence control and pulse-positioning applications. Compare the CPU I/O suffix and high-speed channel allocation before ordering.
