Preparing a transformer enquiry: start with the installation

Mingkong · Updated

A transformer enquiry is easier to review when the equipment requirement and installation are described together. You can start with a project brief or an existing nameplate; a complete model number is not required for the first conversation.

1. Explain what is changing

Is this a new installation, an equipment replacement or an extension? Describe the application and destination. For a replacement, share the available nameplate information and explain why the existing equipment is being replaced. For a new project, send the specification or the information available from the project team.

2. Separate known requirements from open questions

Include capacity, voltage combination and frequency where known. Identify which values come from an approved specification and which still need review. Do not guess missing ratings to complete an enquiry form.

3. Describe the installation and interfaces

Provide available information about the installation space, indoor or outdoor location, access route, ambient conditions and connection arrangement. Existing drawings or photographs can help explain mounting and cable or busbar interfaces. Selection and installation details need to be reviewed for the actual project.

4. Define the equipment and work package

State whether you need a transformer alone, related distribution equipment and accessories, or a discussion about a defined design, construction or integration package. Identify work already covered by your own team or another contractor, so the proposed responsibilities can be made clear.

5. Agree the document requirements

List the drawings, technical schedule, inspection or test records, packing information and language required for your review. Include the expected delivery timing and destination. Any required standard, certification or inspection arrangement should be stated explicitly and confirmed for the selected equipment.

A useful first message

“We are planning a transformer replacement for an industrial facility. We have the existing nameplate and room layout, and need help reviewing the replacement configuration and connection arrangement.”

This is enough to begin clarifying the missing information. Before sharing documents, remove customer names, addresses or other confidential details that are not needed for the equipment review.

Next: compare the offers on the same basis

Once the installation requirements are clear, use the transformer loss and quotation comparison guide to review loss values, operating assumptions and the supporting documents.
